PHOTOGRAPH 51
& THE PENELOPIAD

UNIT 4: READING AND COMPARING TEXTS

Extracts from Photograph 51 and The Penelopiad are integrated into performance and presented in a style that enables students to make clear thematic comparisons and contrasts between the two texts.

We consider the realities of women’s lives within rigidly patriarchal societies from contrasting periods, conventional stereotypes and institutionalised misogyny, giving a voice to the marginalised and oppressed, and how personality is presented as a contributing factor in being treated as an outsider.

This program has been developed using the paired texts, Photograph 51 by Anna Ziegler and The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, in consultation with Complete Works' Teacher Advisory Group.
