PHOTOGRAPH 51
& THE PENELOPIAD

UNIT 4: READING AND COMPARING TEXTS

Extracts from Photograph 51 and The Penelopiad are integrated into performance and presented in a style that enables students to make clear thematic comparisons and contrasts between the two texts.

Among the key ideas explored we consider the realities of women’s lives in a patriarchal society, the nature of institutionalised misogyny, and how personality is presented as a contributing factor in being treated as an outsider.

Enabling the voice of the marginalised is a primary theme of both texts. In this presentation the maids of The Penelopiad feature in a series songs that illuminate their function and importance in the story.
