THEATRE STUDIES
Live workshop
About the Workshop
This 90-minute workshop is designed to support VCE Theatre Studies Unit 4, Area of Study 2: Interpreting a Monologue.
Students will explore the process of selecting, and analysing a prescribed monologue through a combination of dramaturgical investigation, theatrical analysis and design considerations.
The workshop is framed around the key knowledge and skills list from the study design, including: ● dramaturgy, exploring the contexts and intended meanings of the text ● contexts, theatrical possibilities, elements of theatre composition and theatre styles ● the interrelationships between acting, direction and design
Additionally, throughout the session, students will examine key concepts including monologue selection and structure, text and beat analysis and character development.
Students will also be introduced to approaches for interpreting their chosen text, understanding context, and making informed performance and/or design choices that support their artistic vision.
A central focus of the session will be Titania's monologue from A Midsummer Night's Dream (Act 2, Scene 1 + 2) from the 2025 Theatre Studies Playlist, which will be used as a case study to explore the areas of assessment through student participation around elements of theatre.
